Lumi is a curiuos young Ringneck dove, very gentle but shy with people. She was found alone in a garage in a neighborhood next to a park. It made us wonder what kind of ceremony might have been held in the park involving the cruel "release" of white Ringneck doves to their almost certain deaths. We're grateful that the kind citizen who found Lumi brought her to The Bird Rescue Center in Santa Rosa where she got great treatment and care. This one-winged beauty is Ferris! She is a feral pigeon who suffered a traumatic injury that resulted in her wing being ripped off. She took shelter in front of a police station for three days until a very kind officer noticed her and brought her to Palomacy. Once in our care, Ferris underwent surgery to clean her injuries and stabilize her. Now she's recovering and will go into foster care soon. Sam, or Sam the Sammich as her foster parents call her, is one hefty, spirited gal. She's so spirited that she somehow survived for three entire weeks outside of a store until she was rescued! We're thinking passersby kept her fed, because when she was finally saved, her body condition was fantastic, as was her feathers and overall health! Cori is the youngest of the abandoned group and demonstrated a lot of smarts and spunk, doing her best to keep up with the others -- but she's just a baby, still squeaking and so lucky to be alive. We know she's a hen because the boys were already pursuing her amorously. We've placed her in a gentle foster aviary where she'll have a chance to grow up safely! Cori is petite (for a King pigeon) and understandably wary, but she accepts some handling. Spreckles is a rescued racing pigeon who wandered into the garage of a Palomacy member! It was as if he knew to choose her to save him! Except, Spreckles didn't want to make it too easy, and gave our volunteer quite the challenge to catch! The best way to catch a pigeon is with seed, a crate, and lots of patience! Once the crate was set up with a trail of seed leading in, Spreckles's hunger took control, and soon he followed the trail into the crate to eat. Our patient volunteer waited until just the right moment to close the door, safely capturing Spreckles. Now he is in his foster home, getting all the seed he could possibly want while he awaits his forever home. Cinnamon Stormcloud is one heck of a name! But then again, this is one heck of a bird! Cinnamon is thought to be a king pigeon due to her large size (and large personality!) She was brought into Oakland Animal Services at about a month old due to a severely broken leg. Unfortunately, the bone turned necrotic, and amputation was the only option to make sure this Stormcloud kept stormin'! She is recovering from the surgery and is doing quite well! Sweet King pigeon, Paloma, had somehow survived living on the streets in Oakland for 2 or 3 months. She frequented a residential building where the residents often fed her and watched over her until Palomacy was contacted about her wellbeing. A dedicated volunteer tried to capture her one day, but Paloma gave her the slip! The next day, the volunteer spotted Paloma on the window ledge on the 5th floor. Luckily it was an empty unit, and the building manager allowed our hero volunteer to enter and capture Paloma! Sadly, her time living in the wild left her with an injury to her eye, but it certainly hasn't stopped her from enjoying her new pampered life in foster care! Twelve year old lost racing pigeon Nell narrowly escaped a predator (which took his whole tail) and terrified, pasted himself onto the narrow windowsill of the highrise apartment of a very nice couple who noticed him and eventually opened the window for him. He came inside to safety, food and water and two days later Palomacy picked him up. He was still terrified and very traumatized. He stayed terrified even in the aviary, barely functioning. He regrew all his missing tail feathers in a couple of weeks and finally, after four safe weeks totally undisturbed in the foster aviary, he has just now started to relax enough to come back to life. He just took his first bath and coo'ed his first coos. It's not easy to survive for 12 years when you're a racing pigeon and Nell is past ready for a nice, safe, trustworthy aviary home for his retirement years. Argyle is the lone survivor of a tragic rat attack in his owner's aviary. The aviary had a small hole where the hardware cloth was not connected securely to the frame, and that was all the predator needed to get in and kill several other doves. A predator-proof aviary is so important. One mistake can have devastating effects. Argyle is now safely in Palomacy's foster care but has been through a lot. Skye is a Dove that was found in the driveway of a good samaritan. They contacted Palomacy and we took him/her into fostercare. Without rescue this little dove would not be able to survive. They do not have the survival skills needed for life "in the wild," and would surely fall prey to a predator or starve. Skye is now safe and looking for his/her forever home. Update on Daisy Duke: Daisy Duke did not recover use of his left wing. His foster parents maintain the feathers trimmed short so that they don't get in the way while he parades and dances about. He's very happy and gets around well with his marching and his big hops. Because he occasionally gets flipped onto his back with no way to right himself, his foster parents only put him in the aviary or give him access to large bath pans with supervision. Daisy Duke is very gentle with humans. He's more interested in his wife, but is happy to take a ride on foster dad's back during aviary cleaning time, or sit with foster mom during a Zoom call. He's a curious, easy going little guy with a big personality.

Daisy Duke is a curious and charming little survivor. A suspected breeder cull, Daisy was found struggling upside-down with a broken wing and was quickly rescued by a kind person. After making arrangements with Palomacy, neighborhood families gathered to send Daisy off with a new name and a Palomacy volunteer. Daisy is now receiving care for the broken wing and is in good spirits. Daisy has been sharing an inquisitive nature and beautiful coos. Update 10/24/22: It's all good news for Smalls. She has fully recovered from her injuries and can once again fly perfectly well. She's also newly married to Wookie!

Gorgeous roller Smalls was found badly injured and taken to a local animal shelter. After transferring to Palomacy, she visited the vet for a thorough exam and treatment plan and then went into medical foster care. As you can see from the photo, Smalls is recovering beautifully, though she is still unable to fly. Brave racing survivor Razzle was found downed with both legs broken. UPDATE 3/14/2018 Today Hercules married sweet Guiseppe!! They are happily honeymooning. Anyone would be lucky to adopt this pair. Hercules is shy, but very sweet, and Guiseppe loves people and enjoys spending time being in your hand, on your shoulder, and sometimes on your head! This pair would do well as house pets with a lot of out of cage time, or in an aviary outside with lots of human contact.

UPDATE 3/14/2018 Today Hercules married sweet Guiseppe!! They are happily honeymooning. Anyone would be lucky to adopt this pair. Hercules is shy, but very sweet, and Guiseppe loves people and enjoys spending time being in your hand, on your shoulder, and sometimes on your head! This pair would do well as house pets with a lot of out of cage time, or in an aviary outside with lots of human contact.

Hercules was brought into a local wildlife rescue because she was following people around. The people thought she was a super-sized wild pigeon and had no idea that domestic pigeons could have such naturally good looks as she does! While being rehabilitated, Hercules displayed a unique maternal relationship with a group of orphaned wild doves. This big mama raised a large flock of babies, teaching them to forage and defending them from what she believed were potential threats. She was released with her adopted babies miles away but a few days later she was sitting on the step of the rescue waiting for more human attention and another flock to care for. A wildlife center with raccoons and bobcats is no place for a domestic pigeon. Sweet, shy Kenny was rescued on the campus of a local high school. His finder connected with Palomacy and it wasn't until we took Kenny in that we discovered a terrible wound to the throat. We hate to think about what may have happened, but Kenny is lucky. The wound is stitched up and healing well. UPDATE: Hermione has married a very handsome gentleman pigeon named Kenny & though their conditions are different, their needs are the same. Both need a quiet home where they are safe from other pets or birds who would bully them.

Hermione is a proud feral pigeon lady who was living wild & free in the SF Haight District. She was doing great! Strong, sleek & perfect until 12/15/21 when her human neighbor saw that she had torticollis (twisting neck, also called star gazing) & motor control problems (stumbling, unable to pick up food). Hermione was caught & brought into loving supportive care for what may be paramyxovirus (PMV) or may not. After 6 weeks without improvement, she transferred in as a Palomacy medical foster. She's doing fairly well (mostly self-feeding) but still very affected by the head-twisting & dis-coordination. Amelia Toppins is an extremely lucky pigeon. He (we thought for a long time that he was a she . . . but no!) sustained a big, huge abrasion on his breast (suspected road rash) & was rescued by kind people who recognized he needed help. Horace is kind of a miracle pigeon. He was badly hurt but lucky to be taken in by a vet at Medical Center for Birds who nursed him back to health. AUGUST 2022 UPDATE: Percy's BFF Pearl who struggled through several health challenges passed away. Percy grieved & carried on & now has a new BFF, Narwhal, who is strong & healthy & loves her back. Yes- Percy is a lady bird & laying the eggs to prove it.

Percy (in the back) & Pearl are two dove youngsters who were sick & weak when their flock was rescued. They were placed in a foster home that could provide supportive care & access vet treatment if needed. Their first 5 days were spent recovering in a crate with access to a heating pad on low (cage rest) with lots of easy access food & water. Pearl needed a couple of tube-fed meals but they both have steadily improved & are now spending their days outside in an aviary though still coming indoors at night. These two may grow up into a pair or they may grow apart as they mature. We don't know their sex & they won't be sexually mature until about February 2022. Before coming into Palomacy, Captain survived against the odds in a rough & tumble aviary flock. Inadequate nutrition and care as a baby resulted in metabolic bone disease, leading to several fractured bones & no flight ability. Captain would probably do fine in a gentle aviary, but we think he would especially love to be a house pet. This is Casca, a feisty survivor who nearly walked in through her rescuer's back door! This big, beautiful King pigeon was exhausted with hunger and thirst when a Palomacy volunteer arrived, but perked up fast once we provided food and water. Casca is not yet used to being handled or hand fed, but we think a patient caretaker could change that quickly. We think Casca is a hen because a male began his attempts to woo her as soon as she joined Palomacy's foster aviary at Ploughshares Nursery in Alameda. Slim, an amiable little homer pigeon, is married to Sunny, a German Owl hen. They're a strong little pair that can hold their own in an aviary. These two are extremely sweet with each other and fun to watch, and they also keep a tidy nestbox! Neither one is hand-tame but we think they have great potential to be. Update 5/22/21: Unfortunately, Hootie's adoptive mom had to return her to Palomacy when she moved and couldn't keep her. Hootie's first mate, beloved Fleetwood, passed away not long ago, and Hootie remarried to a big, gorgeous Lahore pigeon named Charming. This striking couple is available for adoption into a loving foster home in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Hootie is a shy little Homing pigeon (the kind bred, used & lost in "dove releases") who was lucky enough to get taken to a shelter when she got lost and needed help. The shelter doesn't place birds so she was put on our waiting list and after a month, we were able to fit her in. I'm so glad that we were able to help her not only for Hootie but also for her very happy new husband Fleetwood! He is a special needs pigeon who has been wanting a mate for months and now he is so proud to be married to beautiful little Hootie. They are available for adoption together and will do best in a small, easy-going flock. Let's talk about adorable, adoptable pair Speckle (left) and Uma (right). These two are very much in love and make it clear with lots of sweet gestures to each other. Uma spends much of his time laying as flat as possible, humming for Speckle, who is happy to give him sweet nibbles and to stand or sit on top of him to give him snuggles. These two are fantastic flyers, and Speckle is a particularly talented hover-er. They would make a wonderful addition to a safe, predator-proof aviary where they can stretch their wings. Uma uses his flying skills to build SUPERB nests efficiently, using as much building material as possible. We can't provide new nesting material fast enough! Speck has an adorable tiny little face and dainty little eyes and beak. Her voice is also cute and tiny. Uma is very handsome in every way and has lovely, thick, smoky plumage and gentle eyes. Update 8/2/22: Let's talk about adorable, adoptable pair Uma (left) and Speckle (right). These two are very much in love and make it clear with lots of sweet gestures to each other. Uma spends much of his time laying as flat as possible, humming for Speckle, who is happy to give him sweet nibbles and to stand or sit on top of him to give him snuggles. These two are fantastic flyers, and Speckle is a particularly talented hover-er. They would make a wonderful addition to a safe, predator-proof aviary where they can stretch their wings. Uma uses his flying skills to build SUPERB nests efficiently, using as much building material as possible. We can't provide new nesting material fast enough! Speck has an adorable tiny little face and dainty little eyes and beak. Her voice is also cute and tiny. Uma is very handsome in every way and has lovely, thick, smoky plumage and gentle eyes. Update 5/01/21: Because of family changes -- and no fault of his own! -- Uma has come back to Palomacy foster care. He has married a cute hen named Speckle.

Update 8/30/20: Brave Uma recovered beautifully from HIS injury and has found a loving foster to adopt placement!

Hatched in 2020, Uma is a young survivor of pigeon racing. Uma is beyond beautiful and emanates grace and strength in the face of a devastating injury from a predator attack, in which a large patch of skin on her breast was ripped away, leaving the muscle exposed. Thanks to the amazing staff at Medical Center for Birds, she has been treated with a technique that involves separating the skin from muscle and stretching it to close. This is Cortez. S/he was too starved to fly & too weak to survive much longer & self-rescued by following a nice guy into his house & trying to come back in when he shooed her out. As a domestic pigeon, she has no ability to live in the wild. Someone clipped her wings show style which is a misguided method to try & keep a pigeon from flying away. (Clipped wings do reduce their ability to fly but don't prevent it. We rescue lost birds with clipped wings all the time.) Emaciated Cortez's body condition scored a 1 on the 1-5 scale. Despite what she's endured, Cortez is a lovely, long pigeon that we think is a breed called Oriental Roller. Update 10/2021: Sadly, Myrta's first husbird, Felix, recently passed away. After a brief period of widowhood, she remarried feisty guy Parsnip!

Please meet very clever King pigeon, Myrta. She was caught by a hawk in front of a local house and when the homeowner opened the door, he startled the hawk who dropped Myrta. She saw an opportunity with an open door and flew partway, then ran inside! Needless to say, this happened very fast and the homeowner was baffled, but he went inside and realized he had to help the pigeon!
They contacted a friend who had previously volunteered at the Hayward animal shelter and saw Palomacy's presentation introducing pigeons! This kind friend has offered to foster Myrta while she heals from her puncture wounds. We know Myrta is feeling quite a bit better because in her first days with Palomacy, she was wooed by an older King pigeon named Felix. Update 12/28/20: Sunny is recovering from injuries and has enough stitches to be a frankenpigeon but is bouncing back nicely and would love to find a forever home. Likes: her pigeon block, watching the world, listening to songs. Dislikes: hands in her space, yucky meds for her injuries (even though she takes them fine, just grumbles about it). She is sassy but surprisingly neat with her seeds for a pigeon. She eats almost everything in the seed mix and doesn't fling food about the way most pidges fling it like confetti.

This is Sunny, the “dove release” Homer pigeon who, likely flying home from a wedding or funeral, suffered a brutal predator attack and dropped into the backyard of a kind human. Sunny's wounds have required emergency hospitalization and we are grateful to everyone who has helped her so far, from her rescuer to the Palomacy volunteers who stepped in to assess and transport her, to the veterinarians now providing her with expert care. Update 7/5/2020: Today, Clever went off to a new foster to adopt aviary where we hope he will make a love match!

Clever is a survivor of the squab industry who was inhumanely released then sought shelter in Alameda backyards until injured by a predator. He cleverly survived by self-rescuing in a public beach bathroom.

We initially thought Clever was a girl but as soon as he got more comfortable in foster care he started strutting for himself in the mirror and for his reflection in the window at night.

Clever is quite mellow and keeps to himself. He’s becoming less flighty when approached by his foster mom but he's still got a ways to go. She is helping to clean some oily dirt from Clever’s feathers. In his current state, he can't fly well and that’s probably affecting his confidence. We think that when he’s finally clean and relaxed, he will turn into a whole new bird! He's already super smart and is starting to train his foster mom to do what he wants! Revali (pronounced Re-VAHL-ee) came into Palomacy from the San Jose Animal Control Shelter. An abandoned racing pigeon who survived a predator strike that took his tail and injured a leg, young warrior Revali is now recovering in loving foster care. Revali is named after a bird in Legends of Zelda: One hundred years prior to the events of Breath of the Wild, Revali was the Champion of the Rito tribe. He was known as the most skilled archer of all the Rito and could fire Arrows with the speed of a gale. 12/20 UPDATE Dearheart has been widowed & remarried to a fine strong racing survivor named Revali. She's doing great & shares his passion for extra nesty nest building. When her first mate, Ivy, got sick, she was incredibly loving & devoted to him, comforting him around the clock & right there with him when he died.

Dearheart is a brave little feral Rock pigeon who, when just a nestling, was injured by a predator. Her left wing was mangled but she managed to survive and get to wildlife rescue where she was cared for while on Palomacy's waiting list. Dearheart is very cute and sassy. NOVEMBER 2021 UPDATE: Regalia is all grown up & a very intense manbird. He was married to a small, timid pigeon for a time but was too domineering with her & is now single. Will be interesting to see who he is when he marries again. He may be the same or quite different. Time will tell.

Regalia is all white with a little (at the moment) pink bottom, named Regalia because of her marina rescue, she is constantly trying to figure these humans out. She is sweet with a stop it-some more attitude. She is a favorite of her foster mom. She had a small preening injury from a flock mate and is working through it like a champ with no foreseeable complications. Regalia & friends' rescue is a cautionary tale of an inhumane release done by a well meaning person. They were raised for squab, bought from a butcher and released, they were unable to feed themselves, drink or know that they could fly. Courageous was one of several birds who were rescued after being raised for squab, bought from a butcher, and released by a well-meaning person who didn't know these domestic pigeons have no way to fend for themselves. They don't know how or where to find food or water -- or even that they can fly. One of Courageous's cohort was killed by a predator and Palomacy rescued four others. Casper is a very lucky pigeon. She was found badly injured & taken to wildlife rescue who compassionately assisted her even though she is a domestic rather than wild bird. This poor little dove and its mate came to Palomacy when their owner died and a kind neighbor helped get them to safety. They were kept indoors, in a very small cage (inappropriate for a dove for any length of time) for about 12 years, probably without ever being let out to fly. They are now safely in Palomacy foster care and where that will all change! We will find out more about these sweet doves over time, but for now they will have food, space to fly, and lots of love in foster care until their forever home is found! 11/15/19 Update: Cooper's beautiful wife Boba passed away as a result of reproductive disease & subsequent kidney failure. Despite her illness, they were comfy & happy (thanks to their foster volunteer & avian vets) & honeymooning right up till the end. The widower Cooper is now single & in time, will remarry.

Cooper is a very sweet, soulful pigeon who is very happy to be married to Boba (also a pigeon racing survivor). Cooper & his rescue-pal Wicket were "surplus" racing pigeons that were sold for use as "dog birds" (to train hunting dogs). Their wings & tail were cut as short as possible, the shortest I've ever seen. They couldn't even jump up on the low ledge in my aviary. They were found stray in a South Bay parking lot (likely bought & "released" where feral pigeons live by someone thinking they'd be able to survive, they wouldn't have). They were very lucky to be rescued in time & taken to the Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley who helped them until Palomacy could take them into foster care.
